Obituary for Edward William "Ed" Kulyk

Edward William Kulyk
April 26, 1944 - December 18, 2018

December 18, 2018 marked a very sad day for our family. We lost our dad, husband, and best friend. Ed was unfortunately faced with late-stage cancer a rather short time ago. With slim odds, he chose to face an uphill battle with his positive hopeful attitude. With his usual patience and peacefulness, he fought a grueling two year fight but finally let go a week before Christmas.

Ed Kulyk was a remarkable human being, one of the kindest souls you'll ever come across, young at heart, knowledgeable and fair. He grew up on a farm and after losing his father at age 15 he carried a workload on his back. He was an outstanding athlete but you'd never know it by asking him. He had several records in high school football at Bedford Road, as the leading fullback and played hockey for the U of S Huskies.

During University he met my mom, a football cheerleader from Nutana Collegiate and they became inseparable. They married and moved to Calgary where Ed pursued a career as a successful teacher and coach of wrestling, football, track and soccer. He loved hockey and played all his life.

During a summer holiday in 1975 he built his first home for my mom. He was self-taught and completed it in four months. His extremely hard-working, happy, physical nature left him interested in construction and development. He decided to leave teaching and established his own company going on to build numerous custom homes, subdivisions, apartment blocks, warehouses, commercial buildings and special renovations over the next 40 years. Spare time was always spent working on something else such as dismantling and rebuilding a beautiful cabin on Mara Lake for his family during hot summer days.

Ed left a legacy of proficiency in building construction, skill in athletics, and a relentless work ethic. He had a genuine loving spirit, always appreciating every day and enjoying the sunshine.

We are saddened he was unable to enjoy a retirement for all the fruits of his labor. Now he will be at peace up high in the big sky. He was so well-liked by everyone: those who worked with him over the years, young and old, colleagues, friends, families at the cabin, and doctors and nurses that cared for him. They always stepped aside to say something nice about Ed. Words won't describe how much we will miss him. He will never be replaced or forgotten.

Beloved husband of 50 years to Sandra (Darcy) Kulyk and devoted father to Jeff and Rob Kulyk, Ed is survived by his mother Ann, sisters Leona (Ken) Saunders and Marg (Ed) Kucherhan, their families, and many other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for the Spring 2019.

The family wishes to thank all the doctors, nurses, health care workers and friends who were so special to Ed and our family. To view and share photos, condolences and stories of Ed please visit www.choicememorial.com.
