Myrna Sola Alberto
April 3, 1964 - September 25, 2018

Myrna Sola Alberto was born on April 3, 1964 in Ocampo, Camarines Sur, Philippines as the seventh child in a household that eventually totaled 11 siblings. Most who knew Myrna from childhood still call her 'Evelyn' or 'Belen' because that was supposed to be her name. However, something happened when her birth was registered, which led to Myrna's first name being changed. She did not realize this until her teenage years, when Myrna eventually needed to acquire her birth certificate.

Myrna excelled in her studies from a young age and despite the financial hardships associated with being born into a large family whose main source of income is farming rice, she was able to complete her Bachelor of Education at the University of Nueva Caceres. In addition to working while studying, Myrna was helped by a myriad of people in order to get her degree. She vowed to pay it forward and over the years has helped various siblings, cousins, and nieces and nephews in obtaining their degrees.

During her time at UNC, Myrna met her husband Alberto whom she married on April 24, 1991. A year and a half later, she had her oldest son Albert Nino and her youngest, Evan Kenn was born seven years later. As she started her family, Myrna stepped away from a promising teaching career in order to focus on her kids and eventually manage a small business.

In the early 2000s, Myrna made the biggest decision of her life - immigrating to Canada with her whole family. She dealt with all the paperwork and embarked on a grueling journey of over five years. Many people wondered why she would bother doing something like this - go through a rigorous process costing a lot of money only to have to completely restart their life in a foreign country. However, she was looking further ahead than anyone else - Myrna wasn't doing this for herself, it was for her children. It was to give them a chance at a better life and she was willing to sacrifice anything for that goal. In 2007, all of her hard work paid off as Myrna was able to immigrate to Canada with her husband and two sons.

Rebuilding her life in Canada was as difficult as anything Myrna did, as she had to start from the bottom. Myrna did anything that was needed in order to survive, before finally getting a good job as a Property Administrator of a group of residential buildings in Brampton, Ontario. Here Myrna worked as hard as she could and even did extra jobs in the evening to earn more money to make her dream come true of having a better life. There were many things to adjust to - the new culture, language, weather - but she was able to push through all of it. Myrna supported her family enough that her oldest son went to university with little worry. Myrna wanted to make sure her children didn't have as difficult a time as she had when she went to school.

Myrna's husband was able to get a transfer to Calgary, Alberta for his work, and she moved here with him and their youngest son. She reluctantly left behind her older son who was in the middle of finishing his degree, believing that it was best for the family to go out west. This meant another rebuilding of social groups and career but this time Myrna was able to do something she wanted. After teaching, Myrna's second career choice was to be a nurse, as she truly enjoyed taking care of people from a very young age. However, Myrna knew that becoming a nurse would take too long, so she compromised and became a Medical Office Assistant. She was still able to work in healthcare industry and provide genuine care and kindness to those in need.

In early August, Myrna was diagnosed with an advanced form of Ovarian Cancer as well as Uterine Cancer, after she underwent a hysterectomy. Myrna tried her hardest to fight these diseases but it was unfortunately too late. She passed away on September 25, 2018.

A few days before she passed away, Myrna asked for permission from her husband and two sons to go because she was tired and wanted to rest. She said that she was sorry that she could no longer take care of her family and the she loved them. Until the end, Myrna still cared more about the people around her than herself. She wanted to rest because she didn't want people to see her suffering and her wish was granted, as she passed away in relative calm and peace.

Myrna has touched countless people throughout her life and although they might remember her by different names - Myrna, Belen, Nene, Mama Yin, Mommy, Auntie, Tita, Ninang, Ate, and many others - they will always remember her love and kindness. Myrna was a one of a kind person who did everything for the people she cared about and every single one of them are thankful to her for that.

May she rest in peace, and let us celebrate her life by paying forward everything that Myrna did for us.
