Obituary for Charles "Fred" Mellafont
Fred Mellafont
Charles Frederick Mellafont, born June 8, 1948 in Lethbridge, Alberta, passed peacefully December 17, 2018 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Fred was a loving husband to Daryl for 41 years, a wonderful father to daughters Nicole (Greg), Sandra (Michael) and Cherie (Tony), and a knowledgeable grandfather to Adam, Keith, Charlette, Dominique, Jonathan and Donovan. Devoted son of Charles and Minnie Mellafont (both deceased) and loved by siblings Darlene (Dave), Bill (Marie), Neil(Deceased), Dawn (Shane), Max (Deb), Denise and Harry (Thelma).
Fred’s career started with the RCMP but soon became a City of Calgary police officer, where his last 5 years were spent in the arson unit which started his passion for cause and origin of fires. Once retired he went to work for the Insurance Crime Prevention Bureau for 10 years, followed by opening his own company DOJACK (Named after all his grandchildren).
Fred was dedicated in both his career and his family, he cared deeply for his children and grandchildren. He taught his daughters strength, humour, respect and honesty as he would often say ‘there is some truth in everything I say’. He was charming, witty and always had a smile or a joke to tell. Fred was full of information and loved to share it.
He also loved to travel, visiting exotic locations with his wife or fishing trips with his buddies, adventure called to him. One of his last trips was to the Grand Canyon and he came back from that trip rejuvenated and ready for more.
Fred had a love for camping, fishing and trail rides which made him a modern day cowboy, and it suited him perfectly. He loved being under the open sky and the peace and quiet of the open prairie.
He was a private man with a large circle of friends and family. He was blessed with a good life and we were blessed to be part of it. Fred was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son . He will be missed.
A Celebration of Fred's Life will be held at the Square Butte Community Hall (290132 Highway 762, Millarville, Alberta) on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 2:00 pm.
