Obituary for Anna Bakos (Skiba)

Anna Bakos (Skiba)
Anna (Annie) Bakos (nee Skiba)
February 2, 1921 – August 23, 2018

Anna (Annie) Bakos of Calgary passed away on August 23, 2018 at the age of 97. She is survived by her daughters Peggy (Doug) Campbell and Judy (Rick) Lowcay; grandchildren Jocelyn, Julie, Jamie, Roberta, and Jason; and greatgrandchildren Evy, Kay, Bea, Henry, Milo, Eddie, Elle and Thomas. Anna was predeceased by her parents, husband Andrew, her siblings and daughter Doreen.

Anna was born to Janos and Maria Skiba on February 2, 1921. Her parents immigrated from Hungary in 1910 to New York and then took the train to Montana. They walked from Montana to Lethbridge in search of a better life in Canada. Anna was the sixth of eight children and spoke about how she cared for her baby brother John who was 11 years younger, while her mother was busy with chores. She laughingly comments that she would miss his mouth while feeding him and the spoon would reach his ear instead, as John squirmed about.

Anna’s father worked in the coal mines in Hardieville to save money to purchase a farm. In 1932, he bought a farm at Wilson Siding. Anna and her brothers went to the Wilson School, either walking or taking the horse and buggy, and arriving early to start a fire in the schoolhouse stove.

She married Andrew Bakos in 1939 and continued with farm life near Coaldale growing sugar beets. Doreen was born in 1941 and the family briefly moved to Ontario to farm tobacco one summer. They returned to the farm in Coaldale and welcomed the birth of Peggy in 1948 and Judy in 1951. Anna was kept busy tending to a large garden which always had a spot for flowers, raising a flock of chickens and sewing clothes for the girls. She welcomed the luxury of indoor plumbing in 1961 and choose pink fixtures for the bathroom. We remember coming home from school to find fresh noodles drying on clean bedsheets in the bedroom and on the table. We fondly remember the good soups she prepared.

In 1976, Andy and Anna retired to Lethbridge where they built a new home. She tended to her flowers, loving roses. In her spare time, she also enjoyed doing crafts, needlepoint, knitting, sewing, and embroidery.

After Andrew died in 2002, Anna found herself alone for the first time in her life. She relocated to Aspen Lodge in Calgary in 2006. Anna faithfully attended exercises and crafts. She recovered from several medical setbacks, surprising her physicians. She was unable to recover this summer and passed away in Foothills Hospital.

A Memorial Service will be held at Choice Memorial (105 – 4715 13 Street NE, Calgary) on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to a charity of choice.
