James Alfred Stoppard was born on 02 March 1954 in Hanover, Ontario to Grace and Alfred Stoppard. He was the youngest of three children. His brother Robert and sister Lynn survive him. James attended school in Hanover until age 17 when he joined the Navy and became a cook. He was stationed on the East coast and sailed to many destinations around the world. In 1974, he met his first wife and in 1975, their daughter Stacy was born. James was transferred to the west coast in 1976 and the family moved to Esquimalt. In 1979, James re-mustered into what was then the Tri-Force (Army, Navy, and Airforce combined) and began working in the transport department as an MSE-Op at CFS Kamloops at Mount Lolo. In 1984, James and his daughter were posted to CFB Borden, and then in 1989, to CFB Cold Lake. In 1992, James took his final posting to CFB Suffield where he retired. While in Suffield, James worked as a Commissionaire at CFS Suffield/BATUS. In 2007, James met Esmeralda while working at the Prince of Peace Retirement Community as a cook, and they married in 2008. They made their home in Calgary.

James enjoyed cooking and baking, taking great pride in creating delicious food for others. He especially enjoyed cooking English foods, using recipes taught to him by his parents in the English home in which he was raised. James was an animal lover, and much loved pets could always been found in his home. James also enjoyed traveling, and has traveled to many destinations throughout the world, both while in the Navy, and during retirement.

Memorial Service will be held at El Encuentro Allicance Church (2911 Edmonton Trail NE) on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at 7:30 pm.
