Obituary for Allan Lawrence Joiner

Allan Lawrence Joiner
July 17, 1941 (Sherbrooke, Quebec) – June 13, 2018 (Calgary, Alberta)

His life was defined by challenges that started early in life and continued until the end, yet Allan still had the biggest heart. As dementia took hold of Allan in the last ten years, he retained an extreme level of kindness and appreciation. Even in the last year, when he was almost non-verbal, Allan would respond to people bringing him ice cream, a donut, or a Coke by clearly and quietly enunciating a heart-felt “thank you”.

Allan was also a character with endless elements of surprise, ready to keep you off your toes.

Allan spent most of his life in his beloved Montreal. While he moved to Calgary in 2014 to be closer to his son Marc, he never really accepted that he had actually left Montreal (a blessing in a way, from his dementia).
His three passions were music, dancing and food. Allan passed away immediately after hearing one of his favourite songs, Ian Tyson’s Four Strong Winds. He surely needed to listen to one last great tune before he could move on.

Allan is survived by his two younger siblings Ron and Wilma; his daughter Ann Marie Cote; his son Marc Joiner, and their families.
