Obituary for Victoria Elsie "Vicki" Sprake

Victoria Elsie "Vicki" Sprake
SPRAKE, Victoria
August 13, 1947 – Edmonton, AB
June 7, 2018 – Calgary, AB

Victoria Sprake (nee Breyer) passed away peacefully at the Sarcee Hospice in Calgary on June 7, 2018.

Born in Edmonton on August 13, 1947 to Garfield and Elsie Breyer, Vicki (as she preferred to be called) grew up with her older sisters, Darlene and Eva, in Fort Saskatchewan.

She met her future husband, Ken, in 1965. They were married August 28, 1967 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year.

A life-long Albertan, Vicki has lived in Valleyview, Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, St. Albert and, finally, Calgary in 1978 where she and Ken raised their children, Michael and Jennifer, and bought their home of 40 years.

When the kids were young, Vicki and Ken owned and operated their own small business – a corner store – for a number of years. After selling the business, Vicki took courses at SAIT and went on to work for a tax preparation firm and then a construction company before retiring in 2010.

Vicki has always loved animals. Growing up, her family had several horses and she rode daily. When she had her own family, there were always pets in the house: over the years there were cockatoos, lizards, turtles, rabbits, dogs and budgies. And when her grown children got animals of their own, Vicki took care of them, too! She was always happy to have the “granddogs” at her house when Michael and Stephanie went on vacation, spoiling them with treats and massages. And whenever Jennifer would travel, Vicki would stay at Jen’s place to look after her beautiful but somewhat demanding cat, Lady.

An avid reader, Vicki could often go through two or three books in a week. She has enjoyed family vacations to Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, Disneyland, and Vancouver Island and, in recent years, she took pleasure in several trips to Las Vegas with Ken.

Vicki is lovingly remembered by her husband of 50 years, Ken Sprake; children Michael (Stephanie Thomas) and Jennifer; her beautiful granddaughters, Greta and Annelise Thomas-Sprake; her sisters Eva Myson and Darlene Wong; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers-in-law, Pete Myson and Al Wong.

According to Vicki’s wishes, no service will be held. If friends so wish, donations in her memory can be made directly to the Foundation for Prader Willi Syndrome (FPWR) Canada, 19 – 13085 Yonge Street, Suite 370, Richmond Hill ON, L4E 0K2, or online at this secure link: Foundation for Prader Willi Syndrome.
