The family of Lawrence (Larry) Benner is saddened to announce his passing on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the age of 91 years. Larry will be missed by his daughters, Kathleen Benner (Len Vik), Robyn Benner (Colin Christensen), and his grandsons Connor and Dane Christensen. He was pre-deceased by his wife Marian Benner (nee Sheeran) and son Keith Benner.

Born in Calgary to John and Emma Benner, Larry grew up in Calgary, Alberta in Bridgeland community attending Riverside, Langevan, and Crescent Heights schools. Larry started his career in 1941 working for CN Telegraph. In Sept of 1943 Larry joined the RCAF at age18, where he trained as a tail gunner on a Lancaster Bomber. He was awarded OP Wings Medal for having flown 30 missions overseas. After the War Larry returned to Canada, where he was accepted to McGill University, but chose to return to CN Telegraph where he worked for several years. He then worked 28 years at AGT retiring in 1984. Larry was a past President of the Bridgeland Credit Union and was on the Board of Directors for 35 years. He was past President of the North Hill Curling Club where he curled for 35 years. He also coached Little League baseball in the Banff Trail community. In his youth, he was a competitive fastball player. In 1943 his team won the Alberta Junior Fastball tournament. He loved the outdoors and family trailer trips to the Mountains.

During retirement he traveled to Hawaii, wintered and golfed for 18 years in Casa Grande, AZ. He enjoyed trailering visiting many campgrounds across North America. In his later years, Larry spent summer vacations with his family at Mara Lake, BC. He loved family time and watching his Grandsons in their sports. Larry was a member of #284 Legion where he enjoyed socializing with good friends. Larry was a loving and generous Father and proud Grandpa to his Grandsons. Family and close friends will miss him dearly.

A service of remembrance and celebration of Larry’s life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion #284 (606, 38 Ave NE Calgary Alberta) on Friday, May 26 at 1:00 PM.
