Obituary for John Peter Thiessen

John Peter Thiessen
John Thiessen
August 26, 1946 - April 15, 2017

John Peter Thiessen was born on August 26, 1946 in Swan Plain to Peter and Helen Thiessen. John loved to learn and he became a jack of all trades with his experience in the army, his work as a sheet metal mechanic and as a facility operator. He would love to share his stories with you about his work with the Calgary School Board and with Arpis as well. John met Louise Johnson in 1970, fell in love and married her on April 10, 1971. Less than two years later, Louise gave birth to their son Jason.

John was a man of many interests: he played and coached hockey, he liked fishing and puzzles, he also liked his tools and cars. His favorite sport teams were all the ones from the Calgary area. One of John's passions was singing and he was a part of the Master Singers for a long time. It really did break his heart when his health started to prevent him from going to practice. Another one of John's passions was drinking coffee and he would never decline an invitation for coffee at Tim Hortons. John’s greatest passion was people. He was never afraid lend a hand or to stop and just pray with someone. John was an active member of Eastside City Church for 26 years and he served in many ministries there like: Worship, Guest Services and Small Group Leader. John will always be remembered as a bold man of faith.

John is survived by his father Peter; step-mother Lena; mother-in-law Eileen; son Jason; daughter-in law Julie; five sisters: Anna, Kathy, Beverley, Iris, Maxine and their families; four brothers: Jake, Jim, David, Roy and their families. John was predeceased by his mother Helen and his wife Louise Thiessen.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Eastside City Church (1320 Abbeydale Drive SE) on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at 3:00 pm. The family requests all donations be sent to Mennonite Central Committee online and you can follow this link to donate. https://donate.mcccanada.ca/cart/checkout.
