In 1996 I was working in Brandon, Manitoba as the Events Co-ordinator at the Chamber of Commerce. Ten months into my term, the President of the Chamber approached me with a job offer - to come and work for him at his funeral home as a Funeral Planning Counsellor and Director of Aftercare.  My first reaction was "absolutely not".  Then after giving it some thought and research, I decided that it sounded like a career that I would enjoy.  That was an understatement.  From day one, I fell in love with the profession, the interaction with the families, and the sense of fulfillment from helping people during one of the most difficult times in their lives.  The following year I began the apprenticeship program, and received my Manitoba Funeral Director and Embalmer Licences.

In 2002, I moved to Calgary.  Leaving Brandon was very difficult because I loved the funeral home that I worked in, and in the town of 40,000 people, I had made many strong bonds with the families I had served, and deep friendships developed from many of those connections.  However, I quickly settled in to this wonderful city and worked for Leyden's Funeral Home for three years, then at Commemorative Services (Evan J. Strong Funeral Services) for eight years.  Over this time period, I had the privilege of meeting and working hand in hand with hundreds of families, and helping them plan meaningful ceremonies to both mourn and celebrate the life of a loved one.  I have also had the opportunity to work with many Priests and Pastors in numerous churches throughout the city, becoming well aware of the different cultures, beliefs and customs that make Calgary so unique.  I am fortunate to have the opportunity now to give Calgary and area families a lower cost - higher service option for funeral services.

Apart from funeral service what do I love?  The Calgary Flames, fly fishing, running, and  most of all - being a mom to two out of this world, awesome daughters.

Justin Dufault, Founding Partner

Justin's roots in funeral service ran extremely deep.  He was fortunate enough to discover his career path at a very young age.  At the age of six, he knew he wanted to work in a funeral home, wear those fancy suits and drive that big shiny car.  He was captivated by the funeral directors in his city. As time progressed, his interests grew stronger and in 1990, while in high school, he participated in the Secondary School Cooperative Education Program where he was able to experience the full on, working environment of the funeral home.  That sealed the deal for him and it was at that time he started to realize that this profession was more of a calling for him.  He truly believed it chose him long before he chose it.  He never looked back.   His passion to effectively serve, care and provide for families and individuals in need never wavered.

Sadly, on December 18, 2016, Justin Dufault passed away suddenly.  His passion and desire to serve families with dignity and respect will never be forgotten.  Choice Memorial will continue to serve families with the same care and compassion that governed his interactions with the families over his 25 year career.

Maisy , Warmth, Comfort and Feel Good Funeral Ambassador

Maisy is Calgary's first Warmth, Comfort and Feel Good Funeral Ambassador.   We were so happy to adopt her from the amazing people at AARCS (Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society).  She's a beautiful and wonderful Whippet/Lab mix who's calm and gentle spirit puts our families instantly at ease.   Maisy's warm heart and friendly demeanor was a perfect fit for our family atmosphere at Choice Memorial.   Her specialty is greeting our families at the door, comforting them in a way that is pure and natural and most of all, she's a wonderful listener!!!    Maisy is so gentle and comfortable around children and adults alike, often times laying at your feet, eager for a petting and a hug.  Click "More Info" to see Maisy's story on Global News.

Megan Harvey, Funeral Director & Embalmer

Megan came to to Choice Memorial in September of 2015 with 5 years of experience as both a licensed funeral director and embalmer.  She was looking for a change of environment after working for a high volume, multi-location firm.  She was interested in joining a team where her experience is valued and her opinions and suggestions are welcomed.  Megan is originally from Drayton Valley and she graduated from the Funeral Service program at Mount Royal University in 2010.    We are most certainly honoured and privileged to have her and her wealth of experience.
