Greg L. Varricchio of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, passed peacefully on April 27, 2016 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer with his devoted wife, Jennifer Varricchio (nee Hughes), at his side.

Greg was a graduate of William Allen High School, Class of 1975. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary and received Professional Accreditation in Economic Development from the Economic Developers Association of Canada in 1991 where he remained a member. He also received Certification in Economic Development from the University of Waterloo, and his Fellowship. He was an active member of the Urban Development Institute in Calgary serving as a past member of the Executive and Chairman of the Planning Committee. He was an industry representative on the City of Calgary’s Advisory for the Implementation and Monitoring of the Calgary Plan and the Calgary Transportation Plan. He held memberships with the Urban Land Institute, Rotary International, Economic Developers Association of Alberta, Alberta Building Officials Association, American Marketing Association and American Economic Development Council.

Greg Varricchio was an international award winning economic and land developer for master planned communities in Alberta and the United States. He was a consultant and affiliate member of IBI Group from 2011. He worked as CEO of the Stoney Tribal Administration and Group of companies, was VP of Community Development of Stone Creek Resorts Inc., VP of Community Development for Focus Property Group in Las Vegas Nevada, Executive VP Land Development of Three Sister’s Mountain Village in Canmore AB, served as the Development Manager for United Communities, a publicly traded land development company with projects in Alberta and British Columbia. Greg started in Land Development in 1979 with Nu-West Development Corporation as a Project Manager and later with Jager Industries Inc. In addition to his experience in land development, Greg has an extensive related background with both the provincial and municipal governments in economic development working throughout Alberta. He had a wide-ranging consulting background in business and economic development for both the private and public sectors.

During his career, Greg was the recipient of the Alberta Premier’s Award for Environmental Practices, Canmore Chamber of Commerce Award of Excellence, Calgary Regional Home Builders Association Sales and Marketing Award SAM - Best New Community, 2003, Golder and Associates Internal Project of the Year Award, Canadian Home Builders National SAM Award - Three Sisters Creek Signage, 2002, Mayor’s Annual “Canmore First” Award Urban Design and Architecture, Calgary Herald’s Readers Choice for Best Community, Calgary Herald's Readers Choice for Best Community, Calgary Regional Home Builders Association Sales and Marketing Award, and Calgary Regional Home Builders Association Sales and Marketing Award.

Greg loved large and touched all who knew him. He was a gifted musician playing in bands at home and abroad. He was a long member of the Howling Coyotes and played for Heather Graham’s Slushpile band while traveling with his wife during her author conferences. He excelled in athletics, was an avid rugby player nicknamed ‘Ogre,’ a force in Muay Thai kickboxing, a lifelong weight trainer, and a respected golfer.

Greg is survived by his wife, Jennifer Varricchio; daughters Leeah Varricchio, Isabella Varricchio, Mia Varricchio, and Naomi (Conrad Schmeling) and their daughter, Franca of Calgary, Alberta; sons Daniel Varricchio of Guelph, Ontario and Alex Varricchio of Winnipeg, Manitoba; his father, Philip T. Varricchio, of Allentown; and four siblings, Robert and his wife Maryann of Pittsburgh, Philip T., Jr and his wife Amber of Las Vegas, Nevada, Michele A. Varricchio of Allentown, and David J. and his wife Jing of Bozeman, Montana; . He will be missed by his inlaws Bill & Ivah Hughes and brother-in-law Robert (Shirley) Hughes as well his eleven nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Ida M. (Quigg) Varricchio.

The Celebration of Greg's life will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at West Side King's Church (3939 69 St. SW, Calgary).
